Because! They're made from recycled paper by women in Uganda who have a terrible illness called HIV/AIDS. Many are also trying to escape fighting in the north of their country. I think the beads are sad and beautiful at the same time. They're made by a group called Bead for Life.

Nice, Izz. Their Web site says they're getting rid of poverty "one bead at a time."
