Hey kiddos, I have a great idea for a green holiday gift. It's recycled, doesn't come in plastic packaging, and shouldn't be wrapped in wrapping paper.

Ok, ok, I get it... a lump of coal. I promise I'll be better next year.
Nope. But now that you mention it...
Granny!
Oh, alright. It's a cat or dog from an animal shelter. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals estimates that there are tens of millions of stray dogs and cats in the United States. The cold winter months are an especially important time to give a needy animal a home.
I get the no wrapping paper or plastic packaging parts, but how are cats and dogs recycled?
Many stray animals were once other people's pets who got lost and didn't have tags that could identify the owners.
That's sad! If I find a cat under the Christmas tree, I'm going to make sure I keep him indoors and get him a collar and ID tags just in case he ever accidentally gets out on his own.
